Out at dawn in an open jeep, under one rule: nobody speaks above a whisper, because out here everything leaves before you arrive. Along the way Oliver and Grandma Rose meet elephants, giraffes, lions and zebras, and the grown-up never explains, only asks: what is it doing? Then Oliver spots it first — a little one alone in the grass, a lion cub. Nobody may touch it: its family will find it by smell. So it is done on foot, reading the ground — a fresh print, bent grass, which way the toes point. When the trail runs out, it is Oliver who finds it again.
