What to Gift a 4-Year-Old (When It Feels Like They Already Have Everything)
My son is now 4.5, and this is the age when finding a gift for a 4-year-old gets tricky. Preferences change fast. They move from Duplo to "real" Lego. And it feels like they already have everything.

To give some context β Oliver right now is into scooter, bike, camping, reading, and recently Lego.
Here's what works for us at this stage.
Books for 4β5 year olds
Oli loves listening to books, and we usually read for 40β60 minutes before bed. We borrow a lot from the library, but these are consistently his favourites.

-
Stories from Moominvalley β One of the top books for the second year in a row. A very kind and calm story before bed.
-
Conni and the Pocket Money (and the whole Conni series) β
He remembers whole parts and "reads" it back to us.
- Elmer the Patchwork Elephant β Simple, kind, and always works.
Books where they are the main character
One thing I noticed β at this age, kids don't just enjoy stories, they want to be inside them.
As I'm building Booku, I generate and print books for Oli every week.
His favourite one right now is where he tries different professions together with grandma β archaeologist, chemist, farmer β based on things he already likes.
He keeps coming back to it.

Top toys for 4β5 year olds

- Gravitrax β building, testing, repeating
- Lego 4+ β feels like a shift. He can build on his own now and enjoys it
- Trains β still obsessed. Wooden trains, more wagons, and the Lego City orange train
- Small cars and small animals β finally. Less space, more imagination
- Digging / discovery sets β focused play, exploring, and a big winter obsession of ours.
It feels like it's less about new toys now, and more about how they play.
Best board games for 4-year-olds
This year has been all about board games.

- Ladders and snakes (all variations) β we play almost every day. He prefers the long one with 100
- Outfoxed β my favourite, I enjoy playing it with him. Collaborative and detective type game
- Carcassonne Junior β this is the most recommended one among our friends. Easy to get into, but still engaging enough to play together
- Dragomino β favourite for the second year in a row, and he plays it with older kids too
Activities and sports for 4β5 year olds
- Scooter β learning tricks
- Bike (2 wheels) β all the friends are switching now
- Kids hockey sticks β plays at home with his father and grandpa
- Badminton / tennis sets β simple, fun, easy to start and play with grandparents
What I'm noticing at this age
This is the age when everything changes.
I'm starting to feel the clutter.
So instead of buying random things, I often ask Oli to create a small wish list.
Or I go for a book β something we read together and come back to.
That's also why I got into creating personalized stories. A story about the child just works differently β they come back to it again and again. I was giving gifts like this even before turning it into a product.
